Color Kinetics Japan and RANAGRAM researched and developed together on an interactive facade. We set approximately 1,000 LED lamps on the back of an iron lattice installed on the 4 x 2.5 m wall. Indirect lighting can make subtle visual patterns by employing the reflection of light to the wall. Geometric patterns that change shapes as time goes by and animations that is based on a sound spectrum are generated by using Perlin noise. You can change the density and color of patterns by using the iPad controller. In the tracking mode, outlines of spectators are detected by Kinect sensor and illustrated on the wall screen. When spectators move, the motion of spectators are gradually illustrated with changing its color through optical flow algorithm. We presented this project as a concept work for Live Entertainment and Event Expo 2014 at Tokyo Big Sight. We are planning to adapt this work to a real building soon.

Color Kinetics Interactive LED Facade

From Chris Milk's _[The Treachery of Sanctuary](http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/en_uk/blog/chris-milks-the-treachery-of-sanctuary-unveiled-at-londons-digital-revolution) _to Moment Factory's [music wall](http://thecreatorsproject.vice.com/blog/moment-factorys-fun-and-interactive-musical-wall), there's something about interactive facades that always make our pupils widen and heart rates surge in excitement. Research and design companies [Color Kinetics Japan](http://www.colorkinetics.co.jp/) and [RANAGRAM](http://ranagram.com/works/cklivent)'s newest project is inspiring the same effect in our nervous systems with their Interactive LED Facade.

Simply titled _Color Kinetics Interactive LED Facade_, the machine includes 1,000 LED lamps on the back of an iron lattice embedded on a 13 feet by 8 feet wall. As people walk by, a Kinect sensor tracks their outlines and responds with vibrant visualizations throughan optical flow algorithm. When the wall is audience-less, geometric patterns appear and change shape based on sound data that is converted into animations through [Perlin noise](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perlin_noise).

The team presented the project as a concept work at the Live Entertainment and Event Expo 2014 at Tokyo Big Sight, but they have plans to adapt the wall into a "real building" soon. Imagine a skyscraper facade that turns the movement of birds, cars, and even planes into story-high geometric patterns. Our palms are getting sweaty just thinking about it.
