Life's Adversities Illustrated In The Most Epic Pillow Fight Ever

Hyunho Yoo’s The Pillow Life makes soft but serious blows.

If one thing’s for certain, it’s that life is an unpredictable roller coaster ride, constantly fluctuating between good times, bad times, and everything in between. As a kid you may get stung by a bee, or get picked last for kickball, and then as you get older you get to deal with even scarier problems like a psycho boss and and even crazier spouse. But you can’t have one extreme without the other, which is what Korean director Hyun Ho Yoon explores in his brief, but epic, film following two characters as they progress through life.

Presented at the 2011 WOW Film Festival, The Pillow Life cheekily shows that even though we’re constantly fielding life’s “blows,” the longstanding impact of our day-to-day struggles is rather trivial in the grand scheme of things. After all, humans are strong and resilient creatures.

The video illustrates the idea of ducking life’s blows (or taking them like a champ) through the metaphor of a pillow fight. Studying in the library becomes a frustrating battle, make a mistake at work and get bashed in the head, a family argument becomes a joyous feather frenzy. Set to Ellie James' "Let Me Go," the video navigates through various settings, spanning decades, poignantly inserting sarcasm and gravity into life's trivial circumstances.

Shot with a Canon 7D and using software like After Effects, Maya, NUKE, and PFTrack, Yoon fuzes technique with style in such a way that we can’t wait to see what he does next.
