Living In A World Of Pixels

Kunihiko Morinaga’s pixel dream collection is the perfect combination of retro-futuristic chic.

Japanese fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga obviously spent a little too much time playing 8-bit video games when he was little. With his own unique theory of avant-garde deconstructionism, this cutting-edge fashion designer has become a rising star in the industry, founding his personal brand ANREALAGE in 2003.

A few weeks ago, Morinaga released his Autumn/Winter collection for 2011/2012, which looks like Pac Man vomited all over his mood board—in a good way! From head to toe, each piece is a colorful pixel collage that treads the line between retro and futuristic chic. Even the shoes are constructed out of the small voxel cubes. The models strut the runway to a soundtrack of retro 8-bit electronic music from IPPEI SUGIHARA while wearing face masks that look oddly similar to the Transhuman face masks Jenny Lee came up with for her digital cosmetics project.

If you have the chance to visit ANREALAGE shop, you will find that everything in the space including lamps, chairs and carpet are pixellated.

Morinaga's Spring/Summer 2011 collection was also a hit, and while it was less overtly tech-leaning, it was strongly influenced by futurism, exuding an aura of the underwater world. The models were wrapped in plastic aerated dresses with transparent topknots, looking bulbous and airy like a hot air balloon, giving off the impression that they could fly away at any moment.
