In celebration of Valentine’s Day, a New York City subway tunnel was co-opted in the name of love. Artist Ruvan Wijesooriya invited hundreds of New Yorkers to assist him covering the tunnel with pictures of love, mainly black and white snapshots by Wijesooriya of make outs, kisses, and the occasional cute bunny or puppy.

The art installation took place on Valentines Day at 3pm inside the underground tunnel joining 6th and 7th Avenues along 14th Street in Manhattan. The goal was to turn the public space into a group performance inspired by the energy of love. Wijesooriya says, “Many great philosophers of the world have talked about the importance of love and connection in our lives. #LoveTunnelNYC seeks to celebrate the existence of love for everyone and anyone, by taking the focus away from the couple and exposing single moments of love.”

In its third year, #LoveTunnelNYC is a culmination of photographs taken by Wijesooriya over 10 years time and the photos posted in the tunnel will be available to take away. So in the spirit of giving and taking, join in the festivities and look to make the love tunnel pop up a yearly routine.
