Massive 3D Puzzle-Like Sculpture Depicting Angular Faces Of Life And Death

Meet FOLDS, a sculpture created by David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen.

FOLDS is essentially a massive 3D puzzle, painstakingly assembled by David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen first for Maison des Arts de Malakoff art centre in 2009 and then again in 2010 for Art Paris at the Grand Palais, the gorgeous venue which you might recognize from our Paris event. Consisting of three faces, two of garden variety and a third skull face, the angular construction of FOLDS gives it the look of a 3D computer model come to life.

Staring into the middle skull face and seeing the two humans faces gazing in different directions, it gives the impression of death and decay as an everpresent truth that we largely ignore as we go through life. That assessment too deep for you? Alright, then here’s an alternate interpretation: skulls are sweet.
