Zimoun's Rhythmic Roomful Of Medical Infusion Sets Will Entice You With Its Hypnotic Dripping

The Swiss artist's latest work utilizes medical equipment and fire to create a minimalist and industrial sound sculpture.

What do you get if you cross medical infusion sets, water, fire, and some metal sheets? For most people you'd get some head scratching as to what to do with them. For Swiss artist Zimoun, who creates sound sculptures and architectural explorations from functional materials, you get a brand new installation currently on show at MeetFactory in Prague.

As with all Zimoun's work the title of the piece is pragmatic, 60 medical infusion sets, water, fire, metal sheets 20x20x4cm (above)where a room full of the infusion sets drip water onto heated metal sheets to create a satisfying hiss and puff of smoke. Together they form a rhythmic drip, drip, drip that fizzles and crackles like a strange instrument.

Another recent piece, from last year, is 198 prepared dc-motors, wire isolated, cardboard boxes 30x30x8cm which features a stark, sci-fi-looking white room of white boxes with motorised wires rattling on them to create an insect-like hum that builds like rain water hitting a rooftop.

His third new piece, 318 prepared dc-motors, cork balls, cardboard boxes 100x100x100cm (below)currently on show at Berlin's Opernwerkstätten, features walls of boxes being struck by cork balls to create a rumbling and ominous distant-thunder sound. All three are striking in their simplicity and the way they create an industrial rhythm through their repetition.

From simple and functional materials Zimoun conjures surreal and immersive sound installations that defy expectations. By harnessing the ordinary and the mundane he manages to create something extraordinary and bizarre. And completely entrancing.

60 medical infusion sets, water, fire, metal sheets 20x20x4cm and 318 prepared dc-motors, cork balls, cardboard boxes 100x100x100cm will be on show until 24 May.
