The free NYC art school Bruce High Quality Foundation University opened its own art gallery earlier this year, and now it's being put to good use as a Summer Emerging Artist Residency Program. The residency program gives eight emerging artists 24/7 access to studio space at BHQFU and a new acquired project space, FUG (Foundation University Gallery) from June through August.

This weekend BHQFU hosts Open Studios to show off the work of their artists, kicking off with a reception that is open to the public on Friday, July 17 from 6–9PM, and studio visits through the following Saturday and Sunday from 12–6PM.

Here we introduce the eight artists-in-residence BHQFU selected out of 200 applicants:

Ariel Jackson

"Ariel Jackson uses the body as a vessel to testify about sociopolitical traumas and situations. She develops characters to create testaments using allegorical abstract language aided by a collage of media and craft materials. Her work stems from a desire to create a safe space for testaments outside of the mainstream media and looks to create alternate spaces for maneuvering and exploring sociopolitical traumas via group identity, cultural propriety, and individualism."

Janaye Brown

"Janaye Brown’s video work explores perception of time and tangential narratives. Brown has exhibited at venues and film festivals including the Studio Museum Harlem. Brown received her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and her BA in Cinematic Arts and Technology from California State University Monterey Bay in 2010. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn."

Carlos Martiel

"Carlos Martiel graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts 'San Alejandro,' Havana in 2009. Between the years of 2008–2010, he studied in the Catedra de Arte Conducta, directed by the artist Tania Bruguera."

Orlando Estrada

"Orlando Estrada is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Brooklyn. He holds an MFA from the University of Florida and a BFA from Florida International University. He was born into a family of spiritual mediums and is fascinated by humans and their bodies."

Kevin Evans

"Kevin Evans uses found objects and industrial materials to speak about living conditions in urban communities, our relationship to each other and the quality and cost of living. He enjoys painting, drawing and sculpture as well as performance."

Nandi Loaf

"Nandi Loaf is the most important artist of the 21st century. Nandi Loaf lives and works in New York. Follow her on Instagram (@Nandi_Loaf), follow her on twitter (@NandiLoaf), and add her on Facebook (Nandi Loaf)."

Diana Hamilton

"Diana Hamilton's first book, Okay, Okay (Truck Books 2012) dealt primarily with women crying at work. Three chapbooks came out recently: 1. Universe (Ugly Duckling Presse), a long poem about examples in moral philosophy; 2. Some Shit Advice (The Physiocrats), in which the speaker provides advice about shitting; and 3. 23 Women to Kiss Before You Die (Make Now Press), a collection of four poems about consent, female sexuality, and the quotidian."

Anne Wu

"Anne Wu was born in Queens, NY, where she currently lives and works. She received a BFA from Cornell University in 2013 and was a recipient of the Post-Baccalaureate Award, the Faculty Medal of Art, and the David R. Bean Prize. Her recent exhibitions include Balustrade at Public Address (Brooklyn, NY) and Things Made For Real Life at Cornell AAP NYC (New York, NY)."

The Open Studios are on Friday, July 17th 6–9 p.m. at BHQFU, 34 Ave A, 3rd Floor, and FUG, 431 E 6th St, Lower Level. For more information, check out the Facebook event or BHQFU's website.
