Mondrian And Rothko Classics Get Revamped Into Pixellated Waterfalls

The modern masters get glitched-out by Stuart Ateberry.
Original Mondrian painting

To look at the “hard earned understandings of past artists through a different lens,” Stuart Atteberry (a painter and digital artist himself) has compressed a selection of works by modern artists Piet Mondrian and Mark Rothko, creating two videos of dynamic glitch art. Formerly divided paintings flow into themselves and merge with others; each frame contains up to three different paintings. “I try to do as little manipulation as possible in order to let the works speak for themselves,” Atteberry told us.

He looks for pieces that will blend together, also aiming to capture the essence of the artist he’s encapsulating. Atteberry then puts each frame through a process in which the pixels are sorted by brightness. The result has a watery feel, like a waterfall or fountain unbound by gravity. Atteberry wanted to get “digital hooks,” into the thinking of these artists, and it looks like he succeeded in doing so, creating two enticing pieces on the way. Now all we need is a mesmerizing soundtrack to accompany the smooth movement of the sortings. Futuristic musicians, call in a collab!
