Mogees Turn Random Surfaces Into Gesture-Controlled Musical Instruments

Forget ubiquitous computing, here’s ubiquitous music-making.

The world is full of different ways to make music and you can add Mogees from PhD student Bruno Zamborlin to that ever-growing list. Mogees transform any surface into a gesture-based musical instrument, be it a tree, balloon, mirror, even a shabby old bus stop. By placing the contact microphone on any surface, it changes it into an interactive board where different gestures become associated with different sounds. You can even design your own gestures.

They explain:

In the video we used two different audio synthesis techniques:
1. Physic modeling, which consists of generating the sound by simulating physical laws;
2. Concatenate synthesis (audio-mosaicing), in which the sound of the contact microphone is associated with its closest frame present in a sound database.

If you thought people playing their headphones too loud on public transport was annoying, wait till they bust out one of these and start performing a drum solo on your head.
