New Favorite Hobby? Spotting Emojis in Real Life

They're EVERYWHERE.
Screencaps via

A video from London filmmaker Daniel McKee has introduced us to America's next favorite pastime: Instagram emoji spotting. In a new video called #emojisinthewild, McKee found 817 different emojis in images from his Instagram feed. Some are admittedly a stretch (looking at you "World Symbol Emoji"), but they ultimately inspire us to keep an eye out for the symbols everywhere we go.

The sardonic question, "Does emoji imitate life, or does life imitate emoji?" in the video's description, combined with the nervous Nine Inch Nails track bedding the barrage of emoji mashups, bring the project's absurdity—and it's odd satisfaction—to its front and center.

emojisinthewild became a popular hashtag back in spring and has been going strong ever since, but McKee's rendition nicely bookends the trend. Alright, wild emoji catchers, time to go home. Perhaps you can get your kicks with the upcoming IRL Pokémon game coming out next year instead.
