Painting With Fire

Artist attempts to control one of the deadliest elements with a flick of a sensory data glove.

We’re guessing that Sanela Jahic’s mother never warned her against playing with fire, because Jahic uses it as an artistic medium. As part of a recently past exhibition Machinery For Cynics And Perfectionists, the Slovenia-based artist constructed Fire Painting—a structure built from funnels and vats holding different levels of green kerosene, all connected by clear tubing. In the performance piece, Jahic attempts to regulate the raging fire with an Arduino-based sensory data glove, by which the subtlest of hand movements could trigger or stifle the artwork’s fiery wrath.

Though this isn’t the first time we’ve seen explosives used to create art, Jahic’s work is slightly more unnerving. Unlike Vhils’ explosive graffiti work, we could imagine how quickly Fire Painting might spin out of control. We’re guessing the inherent danger is part of the work’s appeal, because when one deliberately messes with Mother Nature, there’s no predicting what could happen.

In the video, Jahic turns on the kerosene and sparks the valves—the gas pushing through the pipes until flames appear on a plane reminiscent of a painter’s canvas. The masked Jahic beckons the flames with her Dr. Claw-esque glove, exuding the energy of Hades himself.
