Photo Booth Turns Your Portrait Into An Abstract Animation

Fracture I/O augments a standard portrait by generating an animation based on crystalline structures.

As much as we'll always have a place in our hearts for a series of photos of you and your friends pulling stupid faces, it seems the traditional photo booth is going through something of a reinvention at the moment. We've already had a 3D printing photo booth in Japan where people could turn up to create mini action figures of themselves—and you can add to that Fracture IO (above)from MPC Digital.

Fracture IO is an installation that lets users generate asbtract sculptures in real-time using a photobooth equipped with four Kinect cameras and some custom sofware, which records your image as well as depth data from various angles. It then uses this to turn your human form into a "10,000+ polygon 3D mesh" which is used to create a 3D sculpture with animations and shapes generated using the same algorithms behind crystal and organic growth seen in nature.

The results are highly abstract, hybrid portrait-animations that you definitely wouldn't be able to use as a passport photo.
