Print Your 3D Doppelganger With Kyle McDonald [NYC Event]

Kyle McDonald uses the Kinect to take a 3D scan of viewers like you.

While the jury is still out on whether Microsoft’s Kinect will change the world of gaming as we know it with its motion tracking interface, it’s certainly created considerable stir in the creative coding community as we’ve probably reported ad nauseum by now. We’ve seen it used to create virtual graffiti, painting, and many more fun and innovative design projects. And here’s another one…

Our current favorite use of the Kinect’s depth mapping technology comes from Kyle McDonald, whose current project uses the tool to manufacture 3D printed objects—and you’re the subject. An upcoming showcase at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, NY will allow him to take 3D scans of viewers, and print the Kinect-enabled designs on-site.

“With Kinect, everything I've done with 3D scanning for the last two years is starting to take on a new meaning,” McDonald told Create Digital Motion last fall. And he certainly did immerse himself in the subject pre-Kinect: take a look at some of his creations here and here, and in particular, the Janus Machine project. McDonald predicted a “minor renaissance” for interactive art as the Kinect’s military-grade technology enters our living rooms and into the hands of artists, making a variety of tasks that were previously very difficult (but not impossible) all the more simple. It would seem that if such a renaissance was in the making, he’s leading the charge.

At his 3rd Ward showcase, McDonald will be using the beloved DIY 3D printer, the MakerBot, to print his 3D designs. If you’re in the area, come get 3D scanned by Kyle himself on Saturday, May 14 at the Makerbot Print-A-Thon at 3rd Ward in Brooklyn, New York.
