In case you haven’t been on the internet for the last three months, Ridley Scott‘s got a new film coming out. It’s called Prometheus and it’s something of a prequel to Alien, taking its departure from the unanswered question of who was the Space Jockey on the derelict spaceship in Alien?With the aforementioned Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Legend, and, er, 1492: Conquest of Paradise under his belt as director, Scott’s a man who knows a thing or two about the art of the moving image. But the moving image doesn’t start life moving, it starts as an idea, maybe a drunken one, then goes through the many stages of production. And one of those is storyboarding, a kind of pre-film comic strip that maps out scenes and articulates the filming ahead.Above you’ll find Ridley waxing lyrical about the act of creation and how storyboarding is an essential part of this.
