Robotic Trash Can Catches The Garbage You Throw Away

Minoru Kurata’s Smart Trash Can will autonomously collect those lobbed beer cans.

Littering is a total pain, no one wants to see food wrappers all over the street, but sometimes when you throw that wrapper at the trash can, your aim’s off and it ends up on the floor. That way you’ve been an unintentional litter bug just from having a really crap throw. But, this common problem could be a thing of the past if this prototype Smart Trash Can gets commercially made.

In something that wouldn’t be out of place in The Jetsons—perhaps if it was a little more anthropomorphic—Minoru Kurata has created a trash can that will catch any garbage you carelessly throw to the ground. It’s fitted with a sensor that can detect the trash’s position, which it sends to a PC to work out where it’ll fall which sends this back to the trash can wirelessly and it catches your wrapper before it hits the deck. Well that’s the idea anyway, currently its creator says it only has a 10 to 20% probability of going in.

Still, he’s working on improving that and then, when he does, imagine the fun you’ll have throwing beer cans for it to catch.
