A hand holding a pencil sits atop an ankle, appearing as an appendage-only life form. A carrier pigeon takes off its mask to reveal the face of a man. Pavel Nazim, an alumnus of St. Petersburg's Higher School of Technology and Energy, identifies himself on his website as an "engineering graphics" artist. This conjures images of architectural blueprints or complex machinery, but his approach instead appears to be intensely detailed and well-proportioned drawings engineered by his subconscious.

Nazim is skilled in pencil, ink, etching, and computer graphics, using each to craft a unified body of monochromatic work. His political ideas appear in an illustration of a social media-savant dissolving into a massive crowd of followers, and a pair of conscription officers gobbling up masses of frightened civilians. In contrast are serene moments like a man jumping from a log cabin sauna into a lake, or a moment with a whole seat on public transit to himself. Nazim never uses color, but has a diverse palette of humor and emotions etched onto his work. Check out more below.
