See and Smell the Beautiful Swirls of Spice Art

Food historian and founder of AVM Curiosities Tasha Marks crafts fiery-toned prints that pack a zesty punch. For her Aromatic Arts series, Marks concocted a range of aromatic pigments into tangy yellow turmeric, orange gradients of paprika and cumin, and saffron and chili powder’s fiery reds. The artist then printed these dyes into ornamental designs with antique Indian woodblock carvings which, when displayed, hang over the six jars of the spices represented.

Marks' alchemic process literally mixes old with new, blending her roles as artist and historian. “The foundations of my ideas come from history but I always try to mix them with a contemporary twist,” she explains in the show’s press release. “Confectionery is one of my great passions as it is truly timeless: nostalgia and novelty are powerful tools when used in an artistic context.”

Aromatic Art is currently touring throughout England, with upcoming shows at the Brighton Art Yard Sale on May 31 and Art Car Boot Fair on June 14. See more from Tasha Marks on AVM Curiosities' website.
