See The Winning Shot From The World Press Photo Of The Year Competition

See more stunning photos by the other winners, too.

Lead image by John Stanmeyer of VII Photo Agency

For 57 years, the World Press Photo has spotlighted international photographers from around the globe in arguably the largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Expectedly, this year's Photo Of The Year is an absolute stunner: a snapshot by American photographer, John Stanmeyer of the VII Photo Agency, called "Signal." It focuses on African migrants in Djibouti late at night, pointing their cellphones to the sky, hoping to grab stray phone signals from neighboring Somalia.

As World Press Photo explains on its site, "Djibouti is a common stop-off point for migrants in transit from such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East."

Stanmeyer's photo also one first prize in the Contemporary Issues category. The image was originally commissioned for National Geographic, and it is both poignant as well as an interesting investigation into how people across the world strive for digital connection in order to better their lives. This photo beat over 90,000 other submissions. That's an unfathomable amount of pixels.

See more of the winers at World Press Photo, but take a good look at Stanmeyer's picture. We hope you'll never complain about the lack of service in subway stations ever again.
