[Exclusive Video] Sounds Of Peace: Pedro Reyes' Recycled Gun Instruments Find New Home In Free-Jazz Band

The Disarm artist creates hopeful music from the remnants of Mexico's ongoing drug violence.

As a bonus feature to our recent coverage of Pedro Reyes (watch here), whose work repurposing guns into musical instruments was on exhibition at London's Lisson Gallery last spring, we capture Reyes's collaboration withlegendary musician John Coxon (of Spring Heel Jack) for a live free-jazz explosion. While previously we brought you Reyes' inspiration for the project, a trip to the recycling plants where government officials melt-down seized weapons into raw materials, the above video offers the chance to view the fruits of Reyes' labor. Inviting other musicians to contribute to a work that would later be released on vinyl, the live performance was held in tandem with Reyes' show at the Lisson Gallery. "We may not all speak the same language," says Reyes "but music in something universal. As a musical format, it's a requiem for the deceased victims of violence."

Below, Reyes as he details his re-purposing process:
