Play the Soundtrack to Outer Space in an Interactive Installation

Francesco Fabris made sound art from the stars.
Screencaps via

Sound artist Francesco Fabris’s new interactive installation Stellar creates a soundtrack for the cosmos. There is no sound in space, but Fabris used data to create sounds personalized to every star in the major constellations. He connected this data— star brightness, temperature, and distance from the Earth—to qualities of the sound associated with each star— its frequency, amplitude, and duration. "I wanted to to conceptualize a link between electromagnetic and sound waves,” writes Fabris in his description of the project. "The goal was to create a minimalistic, interactive device which would allow visitors to learn about specific stars through sound information.” Visitors interact with the installation by moving their hands above it, guiding its robotic arms from star to star. See Stellar in action below, as well as a behind-the-scenes making of video.
