Summit The Southern Alps In This Gorgeous Mountainside Timelapse

Filmmaker Lukas Unterholzner's impressionistic timelapse from an Italian mountan resort brings you chilling natural beauty in the comfort of your own home.

Looking out at the horizon from a high enough altitude can make even the most vibrant and sprawling countrysides look like hazy landscapes by Monet or Pissarro. Filmmaker Lukas Unterholzner and his artist Flyles Planet seem to have taken this to heart with Basecamp of Impressions, a short timelapse that captures chillingly beautiful vistas from the vantage point of the Southern Alps' Meran 2000 resort.

Unterholzner's crisp cinemetography captures stunning sunrises, a shining, sinking moon, and the warm glow of basecamp tents, all 2,300 feet above sea level. As you watch Basecamp of Impressions, be thankful to the two men who braved the snow and sleet to put these picturesque mountainside views on the Internet. Compared to those painted ice caps, Brooklyn's gloom seems downright balmy.

We freeze-framed a couple of our favorite moments from Basecamp of Impressions below, for your desktop background viewing pleasure:

Plan an expedition to Unterholzner's Vimeo page for more of his timelapsing nature shorts.
