The Force Awakens Poster Gets Remixed

You've never seen Star Wars this...goofy.

We don't often throw out the word "wacky" to describe an artwork, but in the face of the hype built up around Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, a new project from French art and comedy collective "Jaja Poupou" brings it readily to mind. Wagging lightsabers, coffee-barfing Sith Lords, and bouncing Star Destroyers lend the solemn Star Wars universe the kind of levity Jar Jar Binks was supposed to provide (had he not been the most annoying character ever—and probably a Sith Lord himself).

The remix, which takes both video and GIF form, is just the latest in a series called Poster Fever, which has seen Jaja Poupou take on posters from Jaws, Terminator, Gone with the Wind, Mary Poppins, Babe, Rambo, and more, all incorporated into the same wild world. "We did Poster Fever as a passionate love letter to cinema," Jaja Poupou headmaster Barney Cohen tells The Creators Project. "We wanted to put a crazy spark in all these posters because these movies made us who we are. They made us feel alive, love life. They initially put a spark in us. We wanted to give this love back."

Their take on The Force Awakens is an offshoot of Poster Fever called Star Wars Sonata. "We stared at The Force Awakens poster for a long time and juste let our minds go in this poster and give it a silly life," Cohen recounts. "What if a lightsaber was fluffy? What if every character was dumb and fucked up or drunk? What if every prop didn't work the right way?" After many hours in Adobe After Effects, their vision was realized. "We recorded the voices, put them into the posters, and like Frankenstein: it was fucking alive!!!"

Jaja PouPou's imaginative take on Star Wars is, well, out there, but the group sees their format as a potential future of the movie industry. Explains Cohen, "We think that moving posters are part of the near future. So we just want to play with that!"
