Digital artist Philat Matveev reflects on the world’s origins through an animated short film that acts as a visual interpretation of the first 50 chapters of the Bible to recount the story of how the earth was created. Matveev’s Genesis follows a single droplet of light as it falls down a sort of celestial rabbit hole. As we travel through different pockets of space and time, the ball continues to fall; we pass by starry skies and begin to move through different bronze and metallic landscapes.

Viewers look on as the light swipes through condensed solar systems, and flat planes of smoke that are bursting with gaseous clouds, like a volcano ready to erupt. The digital illustrations in Matveev’s animation have a noble quality to them. The film’s color palette and bold light contrast are reminiscent of how Marvel depicts Asgard in their new Thor franchise.

Matveev plots areas in his solar systems using stylized patterns and lines that look almost like Gaelic. Planets and their orbital relationships are graphed and outlined in a way you might see islands charted on an old atlas. Matveev describes his experience making the animated film short as “journey of fantasy between macrocosm and microcosm.”
