The World's First Printed Car

Could torrent sites of the future have blueprints for cars?

The popular slogan for anti-piracy online is: “You wouldn’t download a car.” Well, it’s been a moot point up until now because it’s not like you’re going to download the blueprints, render a 3D model and then printing off a brand new Lexus? As crazy as that sounds, it might not be so far-fetched because a new hybrid car (it can run on gasoline or ethanol) called the Urbee is the world’s first 3D printed car. Similar to other types of 3D printing techniques, the entire body of the car was made from thermoplastics by layering the model from the bottom upwards using 3D printing technology developed by a corporation called Stratasys, in collaboration with the engineering company Kor Ecologic. This futuristic vehicle will debut at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas starting today. As well as being efficient on the road due to its hybrid capabilities, it’s also efficient to manufacture—eliminating tooling, machining, and handiwork while also making it easier to implement design changes.
