Tiny Hologram Creatures Populate This Augmented Mini Golf Experience

Artist and technologist Dan Rosenfeld creates a miniature world inside a wall using projection mapping and the Pepper's ghost technique.

Inside the walls of Urban Putt, an indoor miniature golf course in San Francisco, tiny creatures made of light roam in the cracks and crevices. And when visitors drop golfballs into an entrance in the wall and watch them become trapped in the cracks within, these mysterious beings—known as “sleepwalkers”—help to dislodge and return the balls from their world to ours.

The interactive installation, created by Dan Rosenfeld with the help of set designer Kathrin Feser, combines the Pepper’s ghost illusion with projection mapping to bring the sleepwalkers to life. Four projectors create four diorama-like settings that allow players to peek inside the world behind the walls. By sticking their hands in through the portholes in the walls, players can even energize the tiny creatures and create platforms for them to jump on.
