Two Artists Create An "Electric Bicycle" With Light, Color, And Crochet

New work from NY-based projection artist Dev Harlan, including a collaboration with crochet artist Olek.

We’ve seen how projection mapping can totally transform any surface, whether the visuals are transposed on a Korean national landmark or a simple 3D geometric canvas, like this media sculpture entitled “Any Colour You Like” by NYC-based multidisciplinary artist Dev Harlan.

Originally exhibited at the Christopher Henry Gallery in NYC as part of the “T-MINUS20” group show, this piece features Harlan’s vivid and intoxicating visuals projected upon two 3D foam and plaster triangles. The way the patterns and colors flash, rolling over the points of the triangles, not only draws the viewer in visually, but seems to envelop the viewer’s body in the void between the two shapes. We think the piece is especially entrancing when cued up with Pink Floyd’s song of the same name.

This Thursday, February 17th, Harlan’s collaborative piece with prolific crochet artist Olek, Suffolk Deluxe Electric Bicycle, I will unveil at the NY Studio Gallery, and it’s stunning to see an installation that combines high and low technology in such a complementary way.

In this stop motion video, Dev’s visuals incorporate Olek’s woven yarn technique, providing a piece of work that transcends both new media and fiber art. While these two artists vary greatly in artistic background and medium, this piece shows how they seamlessly come together to transform this everyday object into something extraordinary.

Inspired by Olek’s time-consuming crocheted bicycle series, the duo prove how the coldness of projected visuals and the warm tangibility of crocheted yarn, can be quite a remarkable, if unlikely, pairing.

The opening reception for Suffolk Deluxe Electric Bicycle, I runs Friday night from 7-9 PM at NY Studio Gallery and the exhibition will run through March 12th.
