If you spend way too much time fretting over how to redecorate your living room, maybe you should do what these guys have done—cover the entire place with white sheets and set up some projectors. It’s kind of like the fickle and/or lazy person’s way to do it, but it looks great and you can change the decor to suit your mood or company. Got some kid cousins coming round? Hello Kitty and SpongeBob. Got some sophisticated dandies from the chattering classes? Why, you simply must outfit your apartment with antique Louis XVI furniture, dear boy. Keeping it real with your urban crew? Diamond encrusted walls and gilded furniture. And so on. It could also neutralize those endless rows with your partner about whether to paint the walls Velvet Truffle or beige, and save on having to do any DIY painting to boot.
Designed by Mr. Beam, aka Mo Assem, and Ruben van Esterik the two projection mapping specialists say:
We created an unique physical 3D video mapping experience by turning a white living room into a spacious 360° projection area.
This technique allowed us to take control of all colors, patterns and textures of the furniture, wallpapers and carpet. All done with 2 projectors.
Certainly a unique use for this medium, and with other provocative examples surfacing recently, such as 1024 Architecture’s voice-controlled project, the exploration and potential of projection mapping is entering some interesting new areas. It’ll be intriguing to see what the rest of 2011 has in store.
