Each week we chat about the tools of the trade with one outstanding creative to find out exactly how they do what they do. The questions are always the same, the answers, not so much. This week: Matthias Müller. Click here for more User Preferences Tech Q&As.
The Creators Project: Who are you and what do you do?
Matthias Müller: I am a German visual effects artist. Most of the time, I work on TV commercials and background visuals for big events.
What kind of hardware do you use?
For now I use [a computer with] an Intel core i7 CPU, 6GB RAM, nvidia 9800gt but I want to upgrade my machine soon.
The Space We Live In
What kind of software do you use?
For my 3D artwork, I use 3ds Max 2011 plus all kind of extensions. The most important ones are: Krakatoa + Frost, FumeFx, Particle Flow Tools box #2 and 3 and V-ray. For post production, I use Adobe After Effects.
What piece of equipment can you simply not live without?
I really love my software pipeline since all the tools work so well together. But if I really had to name one, it would be Krakatoa.
Particle Tests – particle flow box #2 and 3
If money were no object, how would you change your current setup?
I would buy a workstation with an infinite amount of cores, millions of cores! Render speed can’t be fast enough.
Is there any piece of technology that inspired you to take the path you did?
No, I don’t think so actually.
Entering The Stronghold
What is your favorite piece of technology from your childhood?
My Game Boy, definitely!
What fantasy piece of technology would you like to see invented?
I can’t really think of anything missing for my job. But for my everyday life, I guess that some kind of teleporting technology would be nice.
