Viral Style #65: Mood-Sensing Dresses, Fake Human Appendages, And iPhone-Charging Longboards

Viral Style #65 features wearable, rideable innovations that will make you look as futuristic as you feel.

BIO-SENSING TECH DRESS OF THE WEEK

Interactive Intel-Edison based Synapse dress by Dutch fashion-tech designer reveals wearers metal states from Anouk Wipprecht on Vimeo.

Looking like it’s been stolen from the set of an upcoming big-budget sci-fi flick, this one-of-a-kind bio-sensing dress by Dutch fashion tech designer Anouk Wipprecht isn't just 3D-printed, it's powered loaded with technology. Made in collaboration with Italian architect Niccolo Casas, the interactive garment known as The Synapse Dress explores the relationship between the wearer’s internal and external states using built-in sensors to detect mood. It's a dress that monitors behaviour while co-evolving with the spaces around it. By the power of concentration alone, wearers can control the garment's LED lights, along with its photo and video capture capabilities, highlighting the potential powers of connection between mind and apparel.

ALCOHOL-SENSITIVE GARMENT OF THE WEEK

A team of five artists has come up with an interesting way to explore Korean drinking culture via the medium of wearable tech.Wearing the dress, known as Metamorphosis, the more alcohol the user consumes, the greater the response they'll generate from the garment's expandable origami sleeves and changing LED lights. The dress tackles an unspoken social code that makes it difficult to refuse offered drinks, and makes it easy to lose track of levels of intoxication. Not in this dress.

FAKE HUMAN APPENDAGE OF THE WEEK

Hands too small to navigate your new iPhone 6? Enter Japanese company Thanko, who have devised a uniquely weird solution to the ultra-modern problem. If it feels like we’re going in a bit of a circle, tech-wise—former decades were dedicated to making mobile phones teeny-tiny, and now we're seeing the rise of much larger "phablets"—just stick on the Thanko thumb extender, giving you 15mm extra reach to help you use your oversized gadget like a real pro.

BUDGET-MONITORING ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

Hey bbz, it’s payday! Don’t rush out to spend all your $$$ at once, though! A new smartwatch called Cash is about to drop that’s designed to monitor your budget and alert you if it senses overspending. Devised by financial correspondent Nicole Lapin, the idea is to tap in a price and category (like clothes) each time you buy something, and the watch will match it against your pre-set monthly allowance entered. There’s a choice of three wristband styles, and you kind of have to love the straight-up alerts it gives too (“Take the damn bus!”).

HEART-WARMING SMART JEWELLERY OF THE WEEK

If you’re one of those mushy types who like to be reminded of their loved ones on a regular basis, this is the accessory for you: created by tech design company Artefact, Purple is a 21st century twist on the classic locket. Inspired by the concept of deepening meaningful relationships, the jewellery connects to social networks like Facebook and Instagram and displays images pre-selected by the wearer. This means you can carry around images the people that matter most, and switch them out when things… sour. Plus, the locket looks good, and is available in luxe textures like silver, brushed brass, gold or platinum. Personally, I’d load it with food pics, but to each their own.

MUSTHAVE ACCESSORY OF THE WEEK

Yo bro, you skate? The Chargeboard is a longboard that generates electricity when rolled on. Using two dynamos in the rear axles, twin transformers are able to generate and store up to 12 volts between them. Then, when you’re just hanging out, you can use the board to charge your iPhone and play music from its built-in speakers, or power other mobiles through an external 2.0 USB port. Kudos to designer Bjorn van den Hout—may your graduation project keep longboarders charged for years to come.
