This VR Game About Accounting Is Actually Pretty Twisted

What does stomach acid have to do with finances? 'Rick and Morty' co-creator Justin Roiland reveals that and more in Squanchtendo's first game.

Let's face it: virtual reality isn't very funny. Awe-inspiring? Yes. Mind-bending? Sure. Empathy-enducing? Many say so. But humor is scarce in the VR landscape, a fact that Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is trying to change with Accounting, out later this month, the first title from his new Squanchtendo studio. Roiland and partner Tanya Watson teamed up with indie darlings Crows Crows Crows to take a story about an accountant and turn it into one incorporating dungeons, vats of stomach acid, and the enraged tree-dweller in the image above.

The magic ingredient to the story is a form of virtual reality-within-virtual reality. Accounting's premise is that a brave group of "Accountants and Numbersmiths" who have in the past, "embraced the abacus and the calculator," now, "must embrace the latest technological advancement": a VR headset. Gameplay looks a lot like Owlchemy Labs' Job Simulator, but if your player was eating magic mushrooms and covered in sarcastic ants. As Roiland told The Creators Project last month, "My approach to game design is combining really strong story and really strong characters with really good gameplay." Get a tiny taste of what Roiland means, plus a dose of his surreal yell-filled humor, in the trailer below.

Accounting will be available for download for the HTC Vive on Steam later this month. Keep up to date with Accounting on the official website.
