Your Favorite Songs Become Buildings In Federico Babina's "Archimusic"

Music from the likes of The Beatles, Bjork, and Joy Division is turned into colorful, cartoon architectural forms.

In a new series titled Archimusic, Italian illustrator Federico Babina turns music from the likes of The Beatles, Bjork, Joy Division, and more into buildings—similar to his last project where he turned painters' signature stylings into architecture. And if, as Goethe said, "Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music," then these buildings are frozen, graphical representations that merge the lyrics and music of the songs with iconic imagery associated with the artists.

Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," for example, features a minimalist version of Battersea Power station from the cover of their album Animals, while Joy Division incorporates Peter Saville's iconic pulsar image from Unknown Pleasures. Some are subtle, some obvious, and they number 27 in total—ranging from pop music to classical and jazz.

"So What" Miles Davis

From the artist:

The idea was taking cue from an intangible item like music, giving shape light and colour to music and its performers. An exercise to uninhibited sense and try to listen to architecture and to observe music. Be guided by the sequence of notes to give form and life to architectural forms.

Reading horizontally gives some basic melodic lines, while reading vertically reveals both harmony and dissonance. A building like an harmonic progression following the movement of chords. A spatial progression that is equivalent to the harmonic progression through chords. Generate a rhythm of solids and voids to reproduce the sequences of notes and silences.

As abstract art shape based on rhythm, proportion and harmony, in these images architecture and music share a clear cultural lineage. The colour and the different nuances of music shape the forms and volumes.
