You've Heard of Nyan Cat? Here's Neon Cat With String

Cats! They just keep getting more awesome.

"Cat With String" 2011 - Official Trailer [HD] from amjc on Vimeo.

The internet loves a good cat video, but this cat video isn’t like one you’ve ever seen before. Cat With String is a simple yet mesmerizing data mosh piece, a full 9 minutes and 29 seconds of neon, psychedelic, acid-tinged color patterns created by video artist and programmer Alejandro Crawford.

If the aesthetic style looks familiar, it may be because Crawford also creates visuals for the indie-electronica band MGMT, a style that’s reminiscent of fellow psych-influenced Creators Black Dice and data moshing pioneer, Paul B. Davis. To create this video painting, Crawford filmed his own cat with a hacked Kinect and ran the data through MaxMSP/Jitter to create the glitchy, color-blocked effect.

You can kind of sort of make out the silhouette of the cat in the lower righthand corner, but who cares, really? The beauty here is all in the abstraction. You can view Cat With String in all its HD glory on the dedicated website, www.catwithstring.info and catch more of Crawford’s experimental short films on his Vimeo and YouTube channels.
