Reminiscent of N1ON‘s upcoming film True Skin, which is about how digital skins will become more integrated into our world, Studio Nancy Tilbury made the short film Digital Skins Body Atmosphere exploring what the future of fashion will look like in the year 2050. Interestingly enough, the film isn’t so much about clothes as it is a prediction of how body mods will augment our bodies like fashion does.According to their predictions, in just 38 years, we can expect wearable items like dresses made from gas and ether, cultured stilettos (a “prediction” that’s already in the works), and a wedding ring grown with love (awww).But it’s body mods take the cake for being the most curious and, well, just plain weird… moisturizer that you can apply by pressing an invisible button embedded in your skin, bespoke fluo (a skin color mod?), “swallowable couture” (still not clear on this one, but maybe it’s like the three-course-meal gum from Willy Wonka but for fashion?), electric eyes, whatever light-emitting vein micro-robots are, and skin lace.For the most part, these physical items and mods seem pretty out there, but a few of them (ahem, augmented reality contact lenses) seem to be inching their way towards reality. One thing I can’t get past is the flesh dress—a fragile shawl made from the wearer’s own flesh, what they call a “couture gown.” That one’s a bit too Silence of the Lambs for me, but what’s the future without some kind of fear factor?On a lighter note, check out this film made in the 1930s that predicted what fashion in the year 2000 would look like.
