Animated Abstractions Visualize Clothes Made Out Of Microbes

A gorgeous animated accompaniment from Esther Perbandt's Berlin Fashion Week performance shows that even microbes can become couture.

Zeitguised, the out-of-the-box contemporary art studio who created this abstract video deconstruction of birds and who reimagined a fashion line as animated life forms, has released an excerpt from new animation, Ectopic, a visual exploration into clothing and the microbial life that accompanies it.

At first, Ectopic appears to be completely abstract. Zeitguised describes the video as, "Blurring the lines between organic matter, live organism and wearable artifact. Clothes become colonies of engineered bacteria to populate the naked skin of humans." Some of its forms are reminicent of microscopic fabric photography, while others conjure images of Lee Griggs' 3D topographies. Soon, however, the black and white vignettes transform into recognizable sheets of undulating, warping, and growing fabrics—textiles made of the very microorganisms that live on our bodies and inside our clothing at all times.

The video is just a selection from the visuals Zeitguised pieced together for Berlin-based fashion label Esther Perbandt. Displayed alongside a live performance at Berlin Fashion Week, the animated interpretation puts a crisp, yet creepy-crawling curve on Perbandt's Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Enjoy the festering feast of digital microbes in the images and GIFs below:
