The famous Ridley Scott-directed "1984" Mac ad—in which athlete, model, and actress Anya Major smashes an Orwellian propaganda film with a giant hammer—had its official Superbowl halftime debut 32 years ago today. Its overlying message, "1984 won't be like [George Orwell's dystopian novel] 1984," is ironic in retrospect, considering the tech industry's role in our current surveillance state.
