CATCH 'MARLINA: THE MURDERER IN FOUR ACTS' IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE

Mouly Surya’s third film Marlina: The Murderer in Four Acts is finally showing in theaters across Indonesia. Basically, the film is a must-watch because I worked on this film as the talent coordinator. Plus, who wouldn’t be interested to watch a feminist Western film set in the eastern part of Indonesia, Sumba? It’s so interesting to see Surya putting an Indonesian spin on the Western genre. The film uses the element of magic and Sumba rural areas, as well as the Sumbanese culture into the masterpiece. I think there couldn’t be a better time to watch this film. The film highlights a woman’s survival, and it feels very relevant especially right now because of all the sexual assault allegations in Hollywood. Marlina feels like a #MeToo. And I think some of the key scenes would’ve been different if a man were to direct this film. Indonesian theaters don't show enough art films that thrive in film festivals abroad, so this is an exciting moment for me personally. Let's hope that Marlina is going to be a turning point in Indonesian cinema, proving that we're not just dumb or passive moviegoers. —Rizky Rahadianto

JOIN A CONVERSATION ON ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH IBUNDA

Mental health services aren’t accessible to everyone. That’s just a fact. But an online platform called Ibunda is slowly changing that. Aside from providing articles about psychology, they also have a box on their website where everyone is free to dump their emotional baggage into. The topics they cover are common, but rarely talked about in Indonesia—like tips on how to support a daughter going through an unwanted pregnancy, and how to get your family to accept your interfaith romantic relationship.

This Saturday, Ibunda is holding an offline support group where everyone can talk about their experiences with abusive relationships. Sometimes we don’t recognize abuse when it happens, and mental health professional Inez Kristanti will be there to facilitate the discussion. It will be held in TierSpace in Senopati at 11 am. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity! —Katyusha Methanisa

REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD TIMES WITH PAYUNG TEDUH

By now you should have heard that Payung Teduh vocalist Istiqamah Djamad, also known as Is, will leave his band come January 1, 2018. Let’s not talk about why he’s leaving, because everyone's talking about it already, or assume that he's on bad terms with the other band members because it’s not relevant. So let’s just do a throwback instead and listen to the OG Payung Teduh songs before they reached mainstream success with “Akad.” —Ananda Badudu

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY AT 'BATAVIA STRUT'

Queens Head is hosting “Batavia Strut” this Saturday for those looking to chill or get down on the dance floor. Playing a healthy mix of modern funk and disco is Midnight Runner’s Munir who just finished touring Asia. Then you have Harvy, representing Double Deer Records who will deliver a set of floor-stomping electronic tunes. DSIX’ Oki Koro, ACIDBEX and Coup de House’s Wall-Droi will also join the party behind the DJ booth. It's free entry, so there's no reason not to come. Better start rallying up your troops and get your dance shoes ready. —Yudhistira Agato

PARTY ON A SUNDAY NIGHT BECAUSE WHY NOT

If you don’t have time to party tonight, or even tomorrow, due to wedding receptions or early morning Car Free Day plans on Sunday, I have a solution for you: party on Sunday night with Sunset People Project. The event, which celebrates the collective's first anniversary, will feature the best talents consisting of the “new kids” and the “almost-legendary” musicians. I know I'll be there on Sunday at Lucy in the Sky, SCBD. —Regan Reuben
