You Need to Watch 'Marlina', Go Party Hopping, Reminisce on Payung Teduh's Good Ol' Days, and So Much More This Weekend

Mouly Surya’s third film Marlina: The Murderer in Four Acts is finally showing in theaters across Indonesia. Basically, the film is a must-watch because I worked on this film as the talent coordinator. Plus, who wouldn’t be interested to watch a feminist Western film set in the eastern part of Indonesia, Sumba? It’s so interesting to see Surya putting an Indonesian spin on the Western genre. The film uses the element of magic and Sumba rural areas, as well as the Sumbanese culture into the masterpiece. I think there couldn’t be a better time to watch this film. The film highlights a woman’s survival, and it feels very relevant especially right now because of all the sexual assault allegations in Hollywood. Marlina feels like a #MeToo. And I think some of the key scenes would’ve been different if a man were to direct this film. Indonesian theaters don't show enough art films that thrive in film festivals abroad, so this is an exciting moment for me personally. Let's hope that Marlina is going to be a turning point in Indonesian cinema, proving that we're not just dumb or passive moviegoers. —Rizky Rahadianto
