A Fox News commentator has been condemned for comparing US President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser to a Nazi doctor who carried out horrific experiments on Jews during the Holocaust.

On a segment about the Omnicron variant on Monday, Lara Logan said that Dr Anthony Fauci “represents Dr Joseph Mengele”.

"What you see on Dr Fauci – this is what people say to me, that he doesn't represent science to them. He represents Josef Mengele," said Logan, who also hosts a show on streaming service Fox Nation.

"Dr Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor who did experiments on Jews during the Second World War and in the concentration camps. And I am talking about people all around the world are saying this," she said.

Mengele, known as the Angel of Death, is one of the most infamous figures of the 20th century. Appointed as chief doctor at the Auschwitz death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland in 1943, he carried out gruesome experiments on on live Jewish prisoners, such as injecting them with chemicals to study the effects. He escaped to Brazil after the Second World War and died in 1979 under an assumed identity.

The Auschwitz‑Birkenau Memorial and State Museum, which preserves the site of the former concentration and extermination camp, called the comments “shameful”. “It is disrespectful to victims and a sad symptom of moral and intellectual decline,” the museum tweeted.

The American Jewish Committee called Logan’s remarks “utterly shameful” and called for an apology.

Fauci’s role has seen him become a focus for those opposed to coronavirus-related restrictions measures in the US.

Logan, previously a correspondent for CBS News, joined Fox in January 2020.
