A group of 34 artists, curators, journalists, dealers, and (of course) critics have unveiled their list of the top 100 paintings that are either on-view or in permanent collections in New York, highlighting works by Dalí, Klimt, Jasper Johns, and more as the best.

So what's #1? Amid the thousands of works surveyed, their pick for the best painting in New York comes from none other than Picasso himself, in the form of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, currently located at the Museum of Modern Art. The 1907 oil painting, viewable above, depicts five Barcelonan prostitutes primitively positioned in such a way as to confront the viewer with their unabashed nudity. Explains Time Out New York Editor-at-Large and Chief Art Critic Howard Halle, the work is "a total rule breaker, ushering in the modern era by decisively splitting with the representational tradition of Western painting."
