PSA: Sydney’s Golden Age Cinema Is Screening Spike Jonze Movies All Weekend

To celebrate the director's appearance at VIVID Ideas, they're showing three of his films on the big screen.

Everyone’s got a favourite Spike Jonze movie, and probably a detailed reason behind their choice. The game changing director is in Sydney for VIVID, and to celebrate his appearance at the festival the movie buffs at Golden Age Cinema are screening three of his major blockbusters this weekend. It’s a rare opportunity to enjoy your annual re-watch of Being John Malkovich on the big screen, or Where the Wild Things Are and Her.

Golden Age Cinema’s Director of Programming Kate Jinx is a Spike Jonze fan from way back. “I mean the guy did co-direct the clip for The Breeders’ 'Cannonball' with Kim Gordon,” she says. “Which I wore out rewinding on a VHS, after taping it from Rage as a teenager.”

Jinx’s favourite Spike Jonze movie was Being John Malkovich, until she saw Her and experienced “an unexpected emotional reaction” to it. “It’s more than just a film about our growing dependence on virtual reality and isolation,” she says. “I view it as a film about the ebb and flow of any relationship—growing together or falling apart.”

But she’s still just as excited to screen Malkovich. “It’s the first time we’ve ever played it on the Golden Screen. It’s also still as bonkers as you thought it was when it first came out.”

In an era where every second Hollywood film seems to star some incarnation of Captain America, directors like Jonze stand out. “I think he’s doing his own unique thing in an American film industry that thrives on reboots and prequels and sequels,” Jinx explains. “Spike Jonze has a great eye for the visual that allows emotional resonance, and that doesn’t trump substance.”

Golden Age Cinema often screens double and triple features from classic and contemporary filmmakers. Recent directors have included Kelly Reichardt, Luca Guadagnino, and Alfred Hitchcock. Stay tuned—this winter they’ll also be delving into David Lynch’s back catalogue.
