Porter Robinson on Making His Anime Short Film 'Shelter'

A behind-the-scenes look at how A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll helped Porter Robinson make a cyberpunk anime.

It’s no small secret that producer Porter Robinson is a big fan of anime. Robinson’s Worlds tour featured anime, manga and video game visuals, while a collaboration with Mat Zo on the track “Easy” got a futuristic anime video from Louis & McCourt. For his latest project, Robinson decided to work on the process of an anime film from the ground-up. For the music, Robinson collaborated with Madeon to create an evocative electronic single and score.

As he explains in a new behind-the-scenes video, Robinson enlisted the help of anime studios A-1 Pictures and Crunchyroll to create Shelter, a story which he both wrote and executive produced. Shelter tells the story of a 17-year old girl named Rin who lives in a simulated world where she builds and explores various virtual realities. While the girl’s existence looks fantastical and fun, all is not as it seems.

“Japanese pop culture and anime have been a huge influence on my music, so getting the chance to make my own anime is very much a dream come true. To actually collaborate on creating anime is just unbelievable,” Robinson explains in the video (above). “The video for Shelter is the most concrete distillation of being immersed into fantasy and it’s connection to reality. Most of our life experience is now in some way connected to technology.”

“The world of Shelter, this virtual reality universe that she’s stuck in where she has this superpower to create environments and go around and play in them and explore them everyday,” he adds. “It’s a beautiful notion and something that’s relevant to my own sensibility as an artist.” Check out the final video below:

Robinson premiered the single on Tuesday, and is currently in Japan where he just screened it live on a digital billboard to an audience in Tokyo’s Shibuya District.
