See (Bird) Tweets Turn Into 3D Flowers

Austrian artist Andy Thomas is transforming public domain bird songs into abstract twisting plants.

Immortalized in the words of everyone from Shakespeare to Wordsworth, the nightingale's sweet song has found itself inside a new poetry: alongside a similarly eboulliant canary's, artist Andy Thomas has turned recordings of the bird's tune into 3D animated 'audio life forms' for his most recent video, Nightingale and Canary. Created using a combination of 3DS Max, Vray, Adobe Photoshop, and several other tools, Thomas' visualizations take the forms of abstract, floating flower bulbs, pulsing and growing according to the rise and fall of the birds' chirps. Sourcing his sounds from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, whose archives are completely open for creative reuse, Nightingale and Canary was created as part of The Europena Creative Challenge. Encouraging artists the world over to take advantage of European public domain, a whole wealth of sounds and images are available on the Europena website for video artists, remixers, and nature enthusiasts to use to their hearts' content.

Reflecting the tone and timbre of each feathered creature, Thomas' plantlife selections are spot-on. We suspect that, provided even the shrill squawk of the crow, the result would still be beautiful.
