Monstrous trucks decked out with endless butterflies and Vegas-worthy light shows roll through Tokyo's industrial underground. Dirty grey cityscapes hide pockets of extravagent parties you're not invited to. Bleached, pierced, and immaculately dressed partiers speed through the streets. This is the world of Skrillex and Vic Mensa's new video for "No Chill," directed by Colin Tilley, whose portfolio bursts at the seams with short films like Chance the Rapper's Mr. Smiley and acclaimed music videos like Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" and Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda." Tilley embraces the wild world of dekotora, the practice of decking out big shipping trucks with more lights, colorful decorations, and accessories than a Spencer's Gifts. Mensa and Skrillex shout, "Practice? What the fuck is practice?" in a flourescent hallway caked with butterflies, lizards, and a gaudy menagerie of other tropical creatures, in between dancing with Daft Punk-looking musicans at boutique clubs, getting yelled at by businessmen, and zipping through a parking garage on hoverboards.The scene couldn't look more different from Lamar's surreal black-and-white flight over Oakland in "Alright" or Minaj's chintzy jungle twerk-fest, but Tilley's hand is evident in his attention to the details of his characters' wardrobes, dynamic use of zoom, and never-ever-stop energy—in fact, like the song Tilley's video itself proudly has "No Chill."Check out the video, as well as Jas Davis' excellent shots of dekotora trucks below.
