The Creators Project Spotlight - Week 6

WAYF 3D STEREOSCOPIC SPECIAL – Rebel Overlay

We’ve been groovin’ all day to the awesome music and video mash-ups from Rebel Overlay, a London-based group of designers and DJs who specialize in live performance visuals, video installations and creative video for the club scene. Their Vimeo channel and website are full of videos that make us want to drop everything, dim the lights, and start an office dance party (and hey, it is Friday…maybe we’ll do just that!). The example above is one of our favorites—an hour-long mash-up featuring tracks from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Fatboy Slim, among others. Best part is, the visuals are in 3D, which we are total suckers for right now (along with the rest of the world). Some 3D glasses would probably elevate the experience into a whole other stratosphere, but it still looks and sounds pretty badass on its own.

Because Clicking Is So 90s – Andreas Lutz

If you spend as much time surfing the web as we do, you run the risk of developing carpal tunnel from all that scrolling and clicking and typing. Thank god for German-based designer Andreas Lutz and his entirely hands-free website Because Clicking Is So 90s. Using just a webcam and microphone, which now come standard in most laptops and desktops, Lutz has developed a website that can be controlled and navigated using only your voice and movements. We’ve seen a number of projects along the theme of gestural interfaces, but this is the first chance we’ve gotten to test one out for ourselves. While it takes a bit of getting used to, and we still haven’t quite mastered the precision of this mode of web browsing, we’re happy to report that it works and is certainly makes for a much more engaged browsing experience. Plus, it leaves our hands free for, uh, other things.

Mollendustria

Drop whatever it is you’re doing and go visit this website right now. Trust us, you’ll thank us later. The folks at Mollendustria, a team of artists, designers and programmers create fun, cheeky, web-based video games that simultaneously serve up entertainment and smart socio-political commentary (but not in a boring, dogmatic kinda way). Our favorites include Every day the same dream, a game that perfectly captures the drudgery and monotony of working life (sorry, boss!), Faith Fighter in which you choose a religion and proceed to kick the shit out of your enemies (play the uncensored version!), and the very topical Oligarchy game, which simulates what it’s like to be an oil tycoon. This is the greatest time-suck we’ve encountered in a while, and best of all, it doesn’t make you feel as dirty as reading trash blogs or watching countless YouTube videos of Antoine Dodson or Double Rainbow.
