Augmented Reality Brings Suwappu Tabletop Toys To Life

Can you keep up with these adorable adaptable characters?

What if toys behaved like TV characters? Creative communications firm Dentsu London wondered, and made their own answer with Suwappu, a set of tiny toys that iPhone cameras can read and enhance.

Suwappu provides interactive iPhone storytelling with an AR-enabled narrative to bring new possibilities to playtime. See it in action in the video above—the user focuses the phone’s camera on the character, and the program fills in dialogue and scenery to propel a storyline forward. Suwappu recognizes each character’s surface texture with augmented reality.

The line’s name, Suwappu, derives from the ability to swap the toys’ tops and bottoms. An upper half carries the identity, and a lower half triggers the environment. The creature’s head and legs interact with each other, and each permutation gives rise to a new scenario. The AR technology adds in facial expressions and a 3D background.

As Dentsu London writes on their blog:
We’re excited about this development in the technology: the app isn’t reading markers in the form of QR or any other kind of code; it’s reading the unique facial features, the colors and the form of the Suwappu characters themselves.

The firm plans on developing episodic installments over time, and increasing interactivity even more. Suwappu characters will eventually expand their play to Twitter and Facebook. The app isn’t yet available for public purchase, but stay tuned for further developments in 2012.

Suwappu is currently featured in the Talk To Me exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art through November 7.
