Designer Bernhard Willhelm Creates High Fashion Neon GIFs

The German designer has turned his collection into rave-worthy animations.

Don’t let the lederhosen fool you, Germans know how to party. Berlin is basically the epicenter of electronic music and techno, and there’s probably more underground clubs there than in any other city in the world. The last time I visited, I ended up at a rave in a street art collective’s gallery that used to be a YMCA. Party in the deep end, anyone? With that snippet of German club culture in mind, the newest collection of clothing from Bernhard Willhelm makes total sense. Not only does it make sense, but it comes complete with a set of neon GIFs that look like a fashion Acid Test.

Teaming with Geoffrey Lillemon and Random Studio, the designer decided to make his spring catalog three-dimensional. Lillemon and his team captured models’ facial expressions with Faceshift software and turned them into animated characters. The result is something like a candy-colored version of the people from Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” video. To create the GIFs, they attached these heads to photographs of the models and used wobble photography to bring the outfits frenetically to life.

Crazy faces and Medusa-like explosion of computerized hair not withstanding, Willhelm’s clothing still stops traffic. His Spring/Summer 2013 collection is a circus of bold patterns, neon colors, and shirts and skirts that have been shredded and knotted back together again. Bernhard Willhelm obviously does not believe that a thing such as “sensory overload” exists. Good thing we don’t either.
