Omodaka Combines Japanese Folk Music With 8-Bit Melodies

Music videos that celebrate spontaneity… and neon.

Above: “Plum Song”

Omodaka is a Japanese collective that’s been celebrating the creative process of trial and error since 2001. The group melds Soichi Terada‘s 8-bit compositions with Kanazawa Akiko’s soft, screeching vocals, but they also showcase a variety of visual artists in their collaborative music video projects. Terada's fusion of rampant electronic sounds and samples teleport you between random genres, while Akiko's traditional Japanese folk vocals paired with offbeat motion graphics form imaginative musical montages.

The video for “Plum Song” (above) takes you on a neon magic carpet ride as you float through a galactic casino of flashy characters and gilded fantasies. The 8-bit sample of DeBarge‘s “I Like It” plus Akiko’s eerie, high-pitched accompaniment combined with Teppei Maki’s video animation concocts a strange mashup conjuring a 1980s virtual Vegas.

“Hietsuki Bushi”

Omodaka's most recent release, “Hietsuki Bushi,” takes on a more somber, realistic attitude with the animation and direction of Ryo Hirano. Check out our other favorites from Omodaka below.
