Stuck In Motion With Slurred Glitch Paintings

The paintings flicker like degrading image reproduction technology

For amateur or hobbyist photographers like myself, a blurry, slurred photo due to some object in motion can be a curse. Swiss artist, Andy Denzler, takes that moment where movement and arrested motion intersect and preserves it in his paintings.

Through oil painting, printing, graphic design and more, Denzler turns that sharp juxtaposition and adds a haunting beauty through his choice of greyscale, melancholy facial expressions in his subjects, and titles such as Ghost In Me. Interestingly, the people and objects in his paintings aren't moving in a manner that would typically catalyze a photo glitch.

For example, the canvas Purple Leaves Fall Into The Water (2013) shown above includes an apparently downtrodden young man walking with his hands in his pockets.

If this were a photo, it would be surprising if a glitch would appear. Rather, this painting calls to mind old VHS, surveillance footage, and degrading image reproduction technology (think Betamax, Super 8 film, etc.).

Paintings, memory, and technology are never truly permanent and lasting. Our interpretations and understanding of moments change as we change and time continues to move. Moments captured in any medium flicker and falter--they could disappear or re-arrange at the drop of a… leaf.

Hand-painted interpretations of technological errors continue to keep The Creators Project fascinated. If you have other favorite aritsts who work with such subjects, please share in the comments section!
