This Is What Happens When You Do A Blank Google Image Search

Algorithmic video making at its finest.

Sebastian Schmieg fed Google’s Search by Image function a transparent .PNG file to see if the search engine could find something similar. He then took the top result, an image of outer space, and fed it back into the image search engine… and repeated that process 2,951 times (he must have a bit of time on his hands). He then edited the 2,951 images together to make the algorithmically generated video above, showing the results of his recursive searching.

Somewhat appropriately, the video seems to reflect the evolution of man himself—starting with images that span the universe, all aspects of life, and of course, end in Rage Comics. For such an experimental and simple idea the results are entrancing—and with over a quarter of a million views in four days, it looks like the internet agrees.
