Watch Holograms Strut The Catwalk For Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren's Polo collaborated with VFX leaders MPC to create a 4D cinematic fashion show using projection mapping that was literally larger-than-life.

For Ralph Lauren's Polo presentation at New York Fashion Week, the clothing brand eschewed traditional catwalks for something literally larger-than-life. On September 8th, the company partnered with global VFX leader, MPC, to create a 4D cinematic experience using a water screen projection mapping system. The 60-foot-tall and 150-foot-wide "runway" loomed over Central Park in a fantasy fashion spectacle.

Mixing live action with CGI, the fashion presentation was more like a film, choreographed to fill the contours of a fan-shaped water screen. It included 12 stylized runway vignettes, dozens of looks, and even projection-mapped sets like a light house. There was even giant-sized projection of Ralph Lauren, himself.

According to MPC's website, the animation sequence was created specifically for the event, and used a depth effect that combined the water spray with visual elements that move towards the viewers, "an effect similar to stereoscopic 3D, but without the use of glasses." In other words, it looked like giant supermodels were strutting towards the crowd situated at Cherry Hill lawn in Central Park.

“I really wanted to do something big for the new Polo Women’s brand — something set in the city — that felt modern," said Lauren in a press release. "We returned to Central Park, a place I love, and captured the spirit of Polo with a truly innovative mix of fashion and technology."
