Ever since we discovered it at our Seoul event in September, we’ve been kind of obsessed with the transfixing crimson swirls of Minha Yang‘s interactive installation Meditation. We even made it a major part of the visual identity at our New York event a few weeks ago, where the installation made its State-side debut. Our Q&A with the artist earlier this month helped enlighten us about the project’s purpose and motivation, but while we had the artist here in NYC, we spoke with him about piece’s unique presence in DUMBO, and how it factored into this particular urban environment.

Yang notes that the installation took on a different character here in NYC. In other cities, Yang explains, the audience seemed shyer, and was more hesitant to explore the interactive potential of the work. When showcased on the first floor of DUMBO’s 81 Front Street venue, Meditation contained “the transmigration of souls,” in Yang’s own words. Circular bands of wispy red light emanated from the display’s projections, and visitors’ movements influenced the light’s movement. Yang meant the piece to serve as “a kind of religious tool,” aided by a serene soundscape that drew your attention inwards.

“I want to immerse the audience so they become one with the piece,” Yang explained to us. Meditation’s ties to an urban environment exist because “the public need a place to meditate, and hopefully the piece will fulfill that role.”
